Product Description:
The TMC2208 stepper motor driver chip for single-axis operation features an integrated power transistor, a working current of 1.4A, a peak current of 2A, a voltage range between 4.75V and 36V, and 256 subdivisions. It includes SpreadCycle™ technology for high chopping frequency, DCSTEP™ technology for blockage detection, COOLSTEP™ technology for dynamic current regulation that saves up to 70% energy, and the StealthCHOP™ flexible interpolation unit for silent operation. These components can provide up to 256 microsteps per step, and sinusoidal control can be achieved even in systems with limited pulse rates.
Due to the widely used StealthChop™ silent technology in 3D printing, these components are compatible with the existing electronics of 3D printers.
Both modules have pulse/direction inputs for fully autonomous operation. Configuration is achieved via digital inputs. They can replace the original TMC2100, offering lower thermal dissipation and being especially suitable for the 3D printing market.
Technical Specifications:
- Motor voltage: 4.75V ~ 36V
- Logic voltage: 3V ~ 5V
- Subdivisions: 256
- Control mode: supports STEP/DIR and SPI interfaces
Product Features
- Stepper motor phase current: 1.2A (peak 2.0A), adjustable
- Support for STEP/DIR and SPI interfaces
- Combination of efficiency and noise-free operation
- High-precision sensorless motor load detection
- Energy consumption reduction by 75%
- High-load operation without step losses
Measurements and Adjustments
Measurements:
The driver current must be calculated by measuring the driver voltage. The VREF voltage can be measured between the potentiometer on the driver and the metal housing of the USB interface (GND). This VREF voltage can then be used to calculate the driver current using specific formulas.
Adjustments:
VREF can be adjusted based on motor performance by turning the potentiometer (clockwise to increase, counterclockwise to decrease).
Note:
Before adjusting the potentiometer, ensure the power is off. After adjustment, power it back on and take measurements to prevent damage to the driver or motherboard.
Driver Current Algorithm and Regulation
- VREF is measured between GND and the central end of the potentiometer.
- Do not connect the motor while measuring voltage to avoid damaging the driver.
- Power the driver during measurement; do not use USB power alone. Pay attention to the direction to avoid incorrect connections!
Usage:
- When using on a 3D printer control board, keep the 3 jumpers under the socket.
- Pay attention to the orientation, as shown in the diagram.
- Can be used directly on MKS SGEN-L without soldering pins.
- The motor direction is opposite to 4988 and 8825. If you wish to replace 4988 directly, adjust the firmware or motor connection.
